Our Statement of Faith

We believe the Bible, consisting of the Old and New Testaments, to be the only inspired, inerrant, infallible, authoritative Word of God written.

We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

We believe in the deity of Christ, in his virgin birth, in his sinless life, in his miracles, in his vicarious and atoning death through his shed blood, in his bodily resurrection, in his Ascension to the right hand of the Father, and his personal return in power and glory.

We believe that for salvation of lost and sinful man regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential.

We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by Whose indwelling power and fullness the Christian is enabled to live a godly life in the present evil world.

We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation.

We believe in the spiritual unity of all believers in Christ.

About

“And they were continually devoting themselves to the Apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”

 Acts 2:42

At First Congregational Church, we want to be “continually devoted” to the same activities that the New Testament Church has been practicing from the beginning.

If you are looking for a church home where you can grow spiritually in the teachings of Jesus and His Apostles, worship in Spirit and Truth, enjoy the loving fellowship of other committed Christians, and express your God-given gifts, please consider First Congregational Church of Cresco.

Wherever God leads you, we invite you to join us whenever you can.

1 Thessalonians 1:5 – For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake.

The World-Changing Gospel

Dear Friends,

The Apostle Paul wrote that the “Gospel” (the “Good News” about salvation in Christ) did not come to the Thessalonians in word only. It did come in word.  The Gospel message must come to people to have its effect. Charles Spurgeon likened the gospel to a caged lion – you don’t have to defend it, you just have to let it out of the cage! In Romans 1:16 Paul said, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes . . .” So Paul, Sylvanus and Timothy certainly preached the gospel in “word”, but not in “word only.”

Whenever a person is saved by the Gospel, they are saved from the guilt of sin and the kingdom of darkness – but they are also saved to a life of holiness and fruitfulness in the kingdom of God. That is why wherever the gospel has truly come, there will be outward evidence of the power and conviction of the Holy Spirit. Believers will be transformed from self-willed, self-centered, self-serving people of the world into God-loving, people-loving servants of Christ.

The Thessalonian Church displayed the reality of the gospel. This letter challenges us to examine our church, and our individual lives. Is the gospel “at work” in us, and among us, or is it present in “word only”? Have you truly received Jesus Christ? Are you experiencing the “good news” as you are set free from the bondage of sin, and to a life of servanthood to God and others? As someone has said, “If you are accused of being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you?”

Food for thought, and prayer, and action.

God bless and keep you, in Christ’s love,

Pastor Tim Sir
